Dining Tables, 2 Shelf Bookcases and Wall Mounted Bookshelves

I have been surrounded by all kinds of beautiful pieces of furniture for most of my entire life. See, I used to live in an old town house within Georgetown in Washington DC; this house was over a hundred years old and was owned by my grandmother, and was filled with a myriad of gorgeous antique furniture.

End Table With Shelves

Among the furniture were a few pieces that particularly stood out from the rest. Firstly, my grandmother owned a fifty year old artesian dining table that was crafted from American oak. This dining table had the most wonderful aroma and texture, and was the centrepiece of the entire house. It gave an unprecedented warmed to the dining room that it was in.

End Table With Shelves

The second piece of furniture that was quite remarkable was an old 2 shelf bookcase that my grandmother used as a bedside table. In it she stored a whole range of precious books, wartime diaries and photo albums. It was made out of unfinished mahogany, and it had this rustic charm that lit up the whole bedroom.

Finally, the last piece that I fondly remember was a birch wall mounted bookshelf. It was in my grandfather's office, and in it he stored his old law journals, volumes and periodicals. This particular bookcase was great because it allowed my grandfather to clear up what was traditionally such a cluttered room. As his books were stored up off the ground, they weren't scattered around the floor taking up valuable floor space.

Even though these three pieces of furniture were antiques, that doesn't mean that you can't purchase yourself, artesian dining tables, 2 shelf bookcases and wall mounted bookcases today! You can get yourself a really good deal if you just spend time looking around. You won't regret your purchase, and I can guarantee that you'll get some great quality furniture for cheap.

How to Make Best Use of a Round-End Table

Do you happen to own a vintage, cozy armchair that sits in the corner of your bedroom, and you still feel that the look isn't complete? Well, nothing will complement this cheery old corner as well as a round-end table beside the chair, maybe with some old photographs and a vase of flowers on it. If the decoration looks familiar, you've often seen it in interior decoration magazines, which suggest the same method of using a round end table as the classic way to transform your room. Round end tables not only fill up bare spaces beautifully, but also exude an old-world charm which is unparalleled.

End Table With Shelves

A Round-end table can be used as an accessory for any room, be it the living room or the bedroom. If you're thinking of changing the look of your home and giving it a unique, tasteful look, you could consider buying round tables. For lending a heavy, Victorian look to your living room, you can safely try out the wooden round-end tables which are beautifully carved. Wooden tables can be in pine, cedar, cherry and oak varieties, all of which are sleek, polished and have a classic aura about them. On the other hand, if you're vying for a more minimalistic yet stylish furniture to do up your room, don't worry, round-end tables are also available in metallic shades. If your want to opt for either the quintessential wooden round tables or the more modern metal ones, you can try out the middle path; which is a round-end table with elaborately carved wooden legs, but having a glass top, which shows off the beautiful design gracefully.

End Table With Shelves

When buying a round-end table, it's better to first gauge whether the table will be congruous with your existing furniture. Its pointless buying a table that will look like a relic-from-the-past in your rooms. If necessary, you can take a few snapshots of the place you want to place the table in, just to be sure that you're choosing the right kind of furniture.

Round-end tables are also perfect add-ons to a room that is decorated according to a theme. For example, during Christmas, when you're doing up your entire home, you can include the round tables into your scheme. Not merely holiday colored table spreads, but also long candles along with golden candle stands can change the entire setting into a romantic one.

Round-end tables can also be used as a display area for all the holiday greetings you've received. Candles, mistletoe, cards and colorful flowers can be used to create a dreamy setting right within your home. If you're inviting your guests over for a party, they will surely admire your sense of interior decoration, because this is a beautiful way to show off all the good wishes you've received.

You can also use the round tables as a place for keeping the chocolates, wine glasses and can even be used as a great place to keep all your party gifts. If you're scared that your room might get too overcrowded at a party, round tables are a perfect ploy to create more space within the existing one, but stylishly so. Of course, you can use the trick of concealing your tables with similar table covers and napkins so that it gives the illusion of a themed look. Round-end tables are thus one of the cheapest ways you can use to give your party a sophisticated look.

We suggest round-end tables not only as a beautiful antique furniture you can use in your room for a vintage touch, but also be used effectively during all the parties and get-togethers, where your guests will keep talking about how your home was not less decorated than a five-star venue.

What Are the Best Ways to Use a Sofa Table?

Space is always precious in modern homes due to the increasing number of items that people are ending up owning even if half of them were not part of the plan while decorating the house. No longer do many of us have the luxury of living in two storey bungalows with enough space for the dog, cat and the horse in the stable. Urban households have limited space, making it essential to use it optimally.

End Table With Shelves

A sofa table can improve the character of your home greatly as long as you place it in an appropriate position. Because it is not the most compact piece of furniture, these tables usually take up a considerable amount of space in whichever room you place it. Therefore, pay attention to its alignment with the rest of the furniture in there.

End Table With Shelves

How can a sofa table help in optimizing space in your home?
• A sofa table is usually placed amidst the sofas in the room. Although this is the typical way of doing things, one must ensure that it is really required there. Most of the time, a sofa table in the middle of couches can make it hard for people to move around. It is better to place it at such a position where it is visible for people and does not interrupt moving space in the room.

• Most of these tables are long and low. However, some of them are equipped with additional lower shelves for storage space. This is excellent to keep the magazines, newspapers and books. If you have guests coming often to your place, this table is the perfect surface to serve them refreshments and drinks.

• A party or an informal dinner has people moving about the place. Therefore, a sofa table in this setting is useful to rest your drink, or your plate of knick knacks while chatting with friends.

Various Styles of Sofa Tables

Wooden sofa tables are popular among households since they complement almost all styles of home décor. They also bring sophistication to the ambience which is appropriate for areas in the house catering to guests.

However, you can add a touch of contemporary interior decoration themes by lining the edges of your sofa table with metal. Glass topped tables can also be used to up the style quotient. These tables have metallic legs often attached to rollers which allow the user to move it around if necessary.

Sofa Tables as a Divider

Most homes have the dining area as an extension of the living room area in modern households. If you want to create a distinction between the two, all you need is a sofa table stretching through the two. Not only is it convenient for people in the room to leave their bags and belongings on its surface before heading for dinner, but you can also use it to keep extra plates, cutlery and napkins for guests to reach out to if they need them. Your sofa table should be at least 36 inches high for this purpose.

Your Sofa Table should be Strong

Since a sofa table is a long piece of furniture it can be required to move around slightly on certain occasions to make space. Therefore, make sure that it is durable enough to endure such sessions. If it is made from expensive wood then spread a cover on its surface when guests are over to avoid drinks or food particles to fall on it directly. Keep in mind that kids will often bump into them, quite hard; therefore, it should be strong enough for that as well.

End Tables - Just One of the Great Options You Can Place in Your Home

If you've ever gone furniture shopping and come home more confused than ever before, don't feel like you're alone. Without even going into styles of furniture, figuring out the difference between one table and another can be a nightmare. Take lowly end tables, for instance. In the old days, end tables came in pairs, usually sold in a set with a matching coffee table. Easy enough. Put one end table on each end of the sofa, plug in a lamp on each and center the coffee table in front. 1950s basic décor.

End Table With Shelves

Somewhere along the line, however, everything became more complex. Some blame the conversation pit era; that crafty sofa that didn't really have an end. Venerable end tables simply had nowhere to go. Coffee tables were suddenly on their own, placed in the center of the pit so visitors had a place to put their drinks while they, well, conversed.

End Table With Shelves

Today, end tables have made a comeback. No longer sold automatically in pairs with a coffee table, they have struck out on their own, joined by accent tables, occasional tables, drum tables, side tables... the list goes on and on and on.

Even though it's easier to find lovely end tables for the home than ever before, knowing exactly what constitutes an end table has become much more difficult.

To help you sort it all out, here are some basics:

End Tables: Though they've been separated from their coffee table siblings, end tables usually come in pairs still. They are designed to go at the end of each side of a sofa or next to a set of chairs and can have drawers for storage and lower shelves for use as a display space. They are large enough to hold a lamp and some knick-knacks.

Accent Tables: Accent tables are usually sold individually. They are a little splashier in appearance and are supposed to "accent" the décor in your room. As such, they come in many different shapes and finishes, including drum tables, drop leaf tables and tilt tops. They can be used in place of end tables, particularly if you just want a table on one side of the sofa or loveseat.

Chairside Tables: End tables can be used as chairside tables, of course. The only difference is the chairside table often has a smaller footprint and is sized to place next to a recliner or chair. Smaller end tables can do the same thing, offering you flexibility in your room designs.

Nesting tables: If you entertain frequently, nesting tables make great end tables as well. The different sized tables tuck under one another when not in use and pull out as needed to add more table space when you have guests over.

Tray tables: If you're not planning to add a lamp to the end tables in your living room, you can opt for tray tables instead. These have easy to remove trays that you can use for serving food or beverages. The rest of the time, tray tables look just like end tables.

The good news is that you can use whatever you like in your rooms these days. There's no need to be locked in the 1950s with the traditional end tables and coffee table set. Use your imagination and find ones that look wonderful in your home, no matter what others call them.

Top Ten Uses For a Coffee Table Or End Table

There are some things a home can't be complete without, like a refrigerator, a bed, or a television. A home is not a home without things that can provide comfort and convenience, and can allow the household members to relax and to unwind. Included in this varied list, among other things, should be a dependable and versatile living room table. Many people do not realize how indispensable this piece of solid wood furniture is. It can certainly do more than serve coffee, or hold lampshades.

End Table With Shelves

A table for coffee, traditionally, was necessary in the middle of the living room. Home entertaining was a serious affair in the old days, because of the ceremony of afternoon tea. When a guest makes a house call, he or she must sit in the cushions, and must be served tea or coffee, with some biscuits or crepes. These will be arranged in a tray, with a delicate china service, and then served and placed upon the coffee table. Then, the afternoon will be whiled away with conversation, stories, and news.

End Table With Shelves

The practice of proper entertaining is almost a lost art. Today most people are too busy to make house calls, let alone entertain their visitors in a fastidious fashion. However, the coffee table has remained a staple object inside the household, and it is interesting to list down how many ways homeowners have devised for utilizing their own tables.

The same can be done with an end table, which usually goes into the corner between two cushions. A lamp or clock is usually placed on top of it. Most homes tend to do away with it nowadays in order to save space or money, but this piece of furniture will actually have extended value once it is seen as a versatile piece.

Here are some of the best examples of other uses for these unassuming pieces of solid wood furniture:

1. A coffee table makes a good foot rest - more often than not, working people want to put their feet up after a tiring day of sitting down or running around for their job related tasks. An end table is usually the same level as the sofa or seat, and thus becomes an instant ottoman. Raising the feet or legs in this manner is a great way to allow blood to circulate normally back through the feet and legs. And if this is done while watching TV or sipping a refreshing drink, it makes for a total relaxing moment at the end of a long day. Working people can also do this while reading, doing some sewing, or talking on the phone, in order to prevent cramps.

2. As a magazine or photo rack - most variations of the end table would usually come outfitted with drawers, or "a second floor" in the form of a shelf between the legs and under the table surface. This space is ideal for stacking magazines, newspapers, or photo albums. These things then become instantly accessible when any member of the family needs a quick reference to a recipe or a movie review, or simply wants to browse through pictures and relieve memories. Then they can also be just as easily kept away - simply drop them back under the table.

3. An instant display shelf - if space is a constraint in the house, a medium-height wood table can be pushed towards one side of the wall, and become an instant surface for knickknacks, flowers, or displays like photo frames or awards and trophies. Be inspired and change the display from time to time. Displaying photos or special mementoes are always guaranteed to bring life and personality to a home.

4. An impromptu workstation - Again, more often than not, space considerations have converted the erstwhile table for coffee into a table for just about anything. If one of the family members wants to work undisturbed, the living room table makes for a reasonably isolated workspace for homework, planning, or typing on a laptop computer. This is practical especially in apartments or studio flats. The living room can serve the double function of an office or den.

5. Play games in the living room - board games or cards are always excellent means to solicit some bonding time in the household. Bring out the game box, gather the family around the table, and have a good hour playing UNO or monopoly. Parents, no matter how busy they are, should try to allocate some time during the weekend to be with their children. Kids who spend time talking or playing with their parents are known to grow up more emotionally secure. Besides that, board games are also known to increase children's mental capabilities, so they get not only precious bonding time with the family, but some serious brain exercise too.

6. The best place for snacks - especially if a teenager has friends coming over for a movie, or for a study group. The coffee or end table is a great place to serve snacks while they do their homework. Bring out a big bag of chips and open a jar of their favorite dip, and prepare some cold drinks too. Kids can gather around the table, cross-legged, in a relaxed fashion, and exchange serious gossip while attempting to study for their calculus examinations. The parent can then be free from worrying about young visitors running around the house, while giving them reasonable privacy at the same time.

7. No ladder? No problem - Yes, a sturdy table can be used for instant elevation when a light bulb needs to be replaced, curtains have to be changed, or dust webs require to be swept away from ceiling corners. But never attempt this, of course, on glass or wicker tables. Only solid wood furniture types fit perfectly for this particular use. This can be another consideration why a wooden table is a better investment than a glass one - aside from the other common fact that glass is fragile and very dangerous, especially in a household full of children. There are numerous instances wherein a homeowner would need that extra height, especially for emergencies.

8. A clear space for doing arts and crafts - If the table is not going to be used for displaying items, it can be left clear for sessions like doing artwork, finishing crafts like scrapbooks, puzzles, or assembling toys like wooden sets, cars, or robots. The small surface of a coffee table is large enough for both materials and some elbow room, but it is comparatively easier to clean and clear away than the floor or the dining table top. For precaution, place some protective sheet or paper to prevent permanent streaks on the wood. The height is also ideal for sitting down sans chair in a comfortable position for hours.

9. An anything goes surface - on most homes, a low table often ends up simply as a place to put things down when people come in from work, school, or anything else. Bags, backpacks, shopping bags, and even shoes, sometimes. These things can temporarily find their docking place on the living room area, until someone remembers to return or keep them away to their proper storage shelves. This valuable function of an low, flat table is usually overlooked, but is actually one of the most important uses.

10. For making guests feel welcome - because even if it might seem farfetched, entertaining important guests, especially elder people, could still happen at home - even to busy adults. It might be a little awkward to serve drinks or wine to an important person in the kitchen counter or the stairwell. Just in case, already having a serving table is a good way of ensuring and showing that a homeowner can still play the part of a good host or hostess very well.

These examples comprise just a small part of the endless and innumerable ways homeowners can benefit from their small solid wood furniture. The limit to uses and options is the imagination. Unexpected circumstances will always bring forth surprising ways to benefit from these things, too.

But in order for the tables to serve their multiple functions well, they have to be made of materials that last. Solid wood furniture must be made of sturdy, dependable wood, and must be constructed to withstand heavy weights or constant moving. Ideally, it should also undergo treating so it will be scratch- and stain-proof.

The size and the design of the table is completely up to its owner's tastes and immediate needs. There are many available variants of living room tables that homeowners can select from. Or else, wood makers would always be more than happy to create a customized table for their customer's specifications. Contacts and information are available in directories, newspapers, or the internet.

Furniture in the living room - or the home for that matter - just does not look quite complete with an accent piece that doubles as useful furniture. And if it is used in many ways, and taken care of properly, then it could very well turn out to be one of a homeowner's best investments.

End Tables - They Have Many Lives

When decorating a small home or decorating on a budget, there is one key to keep in mind - multi-functional. The more functions one piece of furniture can serve the fewer pieces of furniture you will need (great for a smaller home) and the fewer pieces of furniture you will have to buy (great for those watching their budget).

End Table With Shelves

When you go room by room in your home, you will be able to quickly make a list of furniture essentials. For example, in the living room you will want a sofa, chair, end tables, entertainment center and maybe a coffee table. Then your mind may wander to all the little things you need to put away somewhere in this room. You may think that means you need to add other items to your list, that are storage options for this room. But, why not allow the furniture you already have to do this job? Many end tables and coffee tables come with storage areas. By using this kind of end tables you can take that extra piece of furniture off the list, saving space and money.

End Table With Shelves

The most common multi-functional pieces in the living room are end tables. There are so many varieties of end tables it is no surprise.

When it comes to storage, there are some with shelves, drawers, or a combination of the two, so you can pack a variety of things away in this space.

Next, there are end tables that can serve other functions.

Many end tables have lift tops. These can serve a number of purposes. First, if you happen to be short table space for a family meal, the end tables tops can be lifted up, and locked in place to offer more counter space. These are also a great solution for game nights, when you don't want to bring out the rickety card table.

Other end tables have fold out tops. These offer even more tabletop space for games that use a lot of pieces or for a few people to have a place to set their plates and drinks.

Some end tables appreciate the fact that you have a lot of small things that you need to put away. Often people have a TV guide, pens, remote controls and other items that they set on end tables. All it takes is one incorrect motion of a hand and you're crawling behind the sofa looking for that pen or remote. Instead, look for end tables with lips. These have edges that curve up, so if you knock the items on the tabletop around, they will only roll to the edge and stop. This is much easier than going on the archeology dig that could be happening under the sofa.

These are often not thought of as the super heroes of furniture, but they often can be, changing shapes to suit the need of any living space as well as offering the extra, much needed, storage space that lets you feel as if your living room is larger than it really is.

Coffee and End Table Sets That Set Your Home Apart

If you've ever been to a friend's home that is long on seating and short on table space in the living room or great room, then you know how important coffee and end table sets are. These little beauties not only give you a place to set stuff, like a table lamp and your remotes, but they can also help set the style of your room and really give it personality.

End Table With Shelves

Too often, coffee and end table sets are an afterthought. While some people like to buy the pieces individually, usually a coffee table first, then the end tables, you can also purchase them as a matched set.

End Table With Shelves

Coffee and end table sets come in all shapes and sizes as well as styles. This can make shopping for them a bit of an adventure, since there are literally hundreds, if not thousands, to choose from.

One of the great things about going with coffee and end table sets is that you don't have to be an experienced designer to make sure they all match or at least complement one another. Usually they are all the same design, just different sizes.

If you are a bit of a novice in selecting furnishings, this can be a real godsend. Usually all you have to do is pick a style (transitional, contemporary, modern, rustic, etc.) and then focus on the color of the wood or finish.

Here's a little tip in that regard. If you have wood accents on your upholstered pieces, you want to pick the same type of wood, stain or color for your coffee and end table sets. This will ensure that they look like a family of pieces, rather than having something stick out like a sore thumb because it's the wrong color.

As far as the coffee and end table sets themselves, you need to pay particular attention to the size of the pieces. These sets come in all sizes and shapes and you want to make sure that the ones you fall in love with don't overwhelm the room or look Lilliputian next to your mammoth sectional.

Beyond style and size, you really want to think about features. While you wouldn't ordinarily think about a piece of furniture as having desirable features, coffee and end table sets can have an endless array.

For example, you can get coffee and end table sets that are long on storage as well as style. Many coffee tables come with storage space inside, accessible either by doors or through a lift top table that cantilevers up and out from the coffee table itself. The same is true of end tables. Some have shelves, others have a single drawer while still others have several drawers, allowing you to keep things out of sight and out of mind when not in use. These are perfect for families or people who have pets. When company comes over, just store all the toys in the drawers and doored units of your coffee and end table sets.

Keep in mind that you don't have to follow any conventions when selecting tables for your home. While traditional coffee tables and end tables are square or rectangular, there's no rule saying you can't pick a round or oval model, or even improvise and go with a totally non-traditional piece that will fill the bill nicely, such as a trunk or chest.

The important thing is to choose what you like. Thankfully, matching sets make the process much easier, since you can make a single purchase and enjoy the enduring beauty of three quality pieces of furniture that not only match one another, but match the room as well.
